Orthodox Funeral Services

W.G.Raven has been doing Orthodox funerals since the first Orthodox arrived in Victoria during the 1850's Gold Rush, and has an unrivalled history of service to Orthodox communities.

Most newly arriving Orthodox communities first set up churches in the inner suburbs, and continued to use those churches later when the families moved to suburbs further out. The first Russian cathedral in Collingwood, the first Macedonian church in Fitzroy, the first Greek churches in East Melbourne and Carlton, the first Serbian churches in Brunswick and Carlton, and the current Russian Cathedral in Brunswick, were all founded within a few minutes walk or drive of Raven’s Fitzroy and Clifton Hill chapels. Many members of the early Orthodox communities have strong memories of family viewings at Raven’s, followed by corteges around to their churches for the funeral itself.

Since then, most of these communities have scattered and built more churches throughout Melbourne, and many younger companies have followed Raven’s lead in providing services to Orthodox communities. But a large number of families still return to the company that buried their parents or grandparents or great-grandparents. We have helped five or six generations of some familes, and Raven’s distinctive blue hearses are familiar sights at Orthodox churches throughout Melbourne.

Our directors Graham Crawford, Robert Erbacher and Nigel Davies continue the tradition of providing high quality Orthodox funeral services, and many families and priests automatically suggest the W.G.Raven name (or more specifically Graham's, Robert’s or Nigel’s name), when a death occurs.

Thank you for giving such good service.

Whether you need immediate assistance, or are pre-planning or pre-paying your funeral for peace of mind, Raven’s can help.
